Spanish Fort is a well-to-do suburb of Mobile that has grown considerably since its incorporation in 1993. In the 1700s, the town was a French trading post, became British after the French and Indian War, and finally fell under Spanish control after the Revolutionary War. The Spanish built a fort there and resisted a British counterattack, and the territory became part of the U.S. after the War of 1812.
